Vasile’s story

When he was born, Vasile’s parents abandoned him. He remembers being a small child in an orphanage, ‘I saw other children visited by their parents but no one ever came to see me. I would cry by myself all day.’

Vasile as a boyAll his life Vasile lived in one state-run home after another. From the hospital, he went to a baby home, then to a pre-schoolers’ home. At the next home, he remembers the older boys bullied and teased him. They even hit him and threw him about – hurting and frightening Vasile. Life became even worse when the staff started treated Vasile badly. He says ‘I couldn’t trust anyone - I never knew who might hurt me’.

Christmas memories
But for Vasile Christmas was the most beautiful day of the year. There were parties and visitors, ‘I liked singing with the volunteers who visited.’ Even though the older boys mocked him and stole all the sweets, Vasile looked forward to the volunteers’ next visit.  There was something different about them. They watched out for him.

Sponsored through MWB
These MWB volunteers told Vasile that he was being sponsored (someone was helping to pay for his care in the home). At 17, this sponsor came to visit him. ‘They told me she would come,’ he says, ‘but I never believed it until I actually saw her walking towards me. It was fantastic! I felt like I was the most important person on earth! That was the first time I ever thanked God.’

A new life
When Vasile started going to church, Vasile felt wanted and welcomed. What’s more, he says, ‘I realised that God was the only parent I ever had.  He’s carried me in his arms and has never let go of me.  So I chose to become a Christian.’  Vasile was baptised and has since grown in his faith in Jesus.

Today, Vasile works in a bakery. He also helps with the youth ministry in his church and volunteers with Mission Without Borders at another children’s home. He says ‘it’s because I like to do what others have done for me.’

He proclaims that ‘MWB was by my side through the good and through the hard days.  Thanks to you, I am now God’s child.’

You can support a child growing up in an orphanage. By sponsoring an unwanted child, you’ll show them that someone does care. You’ll also be helping them step up to a better future when they have to leave the home.
How does it work?
